CARB Clean Truck Check: Your 2026 Guide to Compliance in California

Here’s what Clean Truck Check looks like in 2026: who has to test, how often, and how to stay ahead of your deadlines.

Who has to test?

Diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR that drive in California. That includes box trucks, work trucks, dump trucks, buses, and motorhomes. Out-of-state trucks count too, if they drive here.

How often?

  • Most vehicles: twice a year.
  • California-registered motorhomes and farm vehicles: once a year.
  • Coming in late 2027: trucks with OBDII (diesel 2013+) move to four times a year.

You can submit a passing test up to 90 days before your deadline. Testing early gives you time to fix anything that comes up.

The annual fee

CARB charges a small yearly compliance fee for each vehicle, paid in your CTC-VIS account. The amount is updated every January, and CTC-VIS always shows the current fee.

Which test?

  • Diesel 2013 and newer: OBDII scan
  • Diesel 2012 and older: smoke opacity test plus visual inspection

Got a Notice to Submit?

That letter means CARB wants a passing test within 30 days. Text us right away and we’ll try to fit you in fast.

What happens if I miss a deadline?

CARB can block your DMV registration and issue fines. It’s much easier to test on time.
