Quick answer: if your vehicle runs on diesel or alternative fuel, weighs over 14,000 lbs GVWR, and drives on California roads, you almost certainly need Clean Truck Check.
You probably need it if you have
- A diesel box truck, work truck, dump truck, or flatbed over 14,000 lbs
- A diesel motorhome over 14,000 lbs
- A CNG or propane truck over 14,000 lbs
- An out-of-state truck that drives in California
You probably don’t if you have
- A gas-powered vehicle
- A fully electric vehicle
- A vehicle 14,000 lbs GVWR or less. (Those get a regular smog check instead.)
Find your GVWR on the sticker inside the driver’s door.
What you’ll need to do
- Register your vehicle in CARB’s CTC-VIS system.
- Pay the small yearly fee there.
- Pass a test before each deadline. Most vehicles test twice a year. California motorhomes test once a year.
