CARB Clean Truck Test: What to Bring & How to Prepare

A little prep makes your Clean Truck Check quick and painless. Here’s what to have ready.

Have these ready

  • Keys, and easy access to the diagnostic port
  • Your registration or VIN
  • Your CTC-VIS login
  • Your yearly compliance fee paid to CARB through their CTC-VIS portal

Newer trucks (OBDII)

Diesel 2013 and newer, and alternative fuel 2018 and newer, get an OBDII scan.

Don’t test right after clearing codes or disconnecting the battery. Drive it normally for a few days first so the truck’s computer can finish its self-checks.

Older trucks (smoke opacity)

Diesel 2012 and older get a smoke opacity test and a visual check of the emissions parts. Warm the engine up before the test, and fix any known exhaust leaks.

Timing

You can submit a passing test up to 90 days before your deadline. Testing early gives you time to fix anything without stress. Your due dates are listed in CTC-VIS.
