CARB Clean Truck Test: What to Bring & How to Prepare
Cut re-checks and “Not Ready” results with a simple prep checklist before your Clean Truck Check.
What to Bring (Quick List)
Vehicle access: Keys and clearance to the cab, hood, and diagnostic connector (no panel blockers or clutter). Blocked engine access, like under the bed or bathroom tile in a motorhome, need to be cleared for access prior to testing.
Vehicle details handy: Registration or VIN to help the tester verify the right unit in CTC-VIS.
CTC-VIS login email/plate: So you can confirm deadlines and see results after testing in your account.
Fleet notes (optional): Unit/asset IDs if you’re sending multiple trucks.
Why it matters: Test results are submitted by a CARB-credentialed tester and appear in your CTC-VIS account; keeping info aligned avoids mismatches and delays.
Preparing OBD-Equipped Vehicles (2013+ diesel, 2018+ alt-fuel)
Do not test right after clearing codes or a battery disconnect. Drive normally first to meet OBD readiness. CARB advises that several warm-up cycles (e.g., ~5 in a week) may be needed before testing.
Operate the vehicle enough to meet readiness criteria. If your first test returns “Not Ready,” run additional operation and retest before the deadline.
Ensure connector access: Remove any covers/aftermarket blockers so the tester can plug into the diagnostic port.
What the tester does: Performs an OBD scan using a CARB-certified device; results are transmitted to CARB and shown in your CTC-VIS account.
Preparing Non-OBD Vehicles (≤2012 diesel, ≤2017 alt-fuel)
Expect a smoke opacity + visual inspection for non-OBD diesels; alt-fuel non-OBD receive the visual inspection only.
Follow tester instructions for snap-acceleration (SAE J1667) and safety; provide clear space around the vehicle.
What the tester does: Uses the SAE J1667 procedure for opacity, plus a visual check of required emissions controls.
Timing Tips (Avoid Re-checks)
Test up to 90 days early to leave room for repairs and retesting before your deadline.
Verify your exact due date in CTC-VIS (DMV month or VIN-digit schedule depending on registration).
Pay the annual compliance fee in CTC-VIS (not other CARB portals) so your status shows compliant once you pass.
