If your check engine light is on, your car won’t pass a smog check. Here’s what to do, step by step.
Step 1: Find out why it’s on
A mechanic or many auto parts stores can read the trouble code for you. That code tells you where to start.
Don’t just clear the code. Clearing it resets your car’s computer, and you’ll get a “not ready” result at your smog check.
Step 2: Get it fixed
Take it to a mechanic you trust. Use original or CARB-approved parts.
We’re a test-only station, so we don’t do repairs.
Step 3: Drive it for a few days
After a repair, your car’s computer needs time to re-run its self-checks. Drive normally for a few days, often 100 to 200 miles with some freeway time.
Step 4: Come see us
Once the light stays off and you’ve driven a bit, you’re ready. Text us before you head over.
Repairs getting expensive?
California’s Consumer Assistance Program may help income-eligible drivers pay for emissions repairs.
