Buying or selling a car in California? Most title transfers need a smog check. We’ll knock it out quickly and send the results to the DMV for you.
Who needs a change of ownership smog?
In most cases, the seller is responsible for providing a valid smog certificate when a car changes hands. A few exceptions:
- Cars less than four years old don’t need one. The new owner pays a smog transfer fee to the DMV instead.
- Gas cars 1975 and older, diesels 1997 and older, and electric cars don’t need one.
- Transfers between close family members are often exempt.
Not sure? Text us the year and type of car and we’ll help you figure it out.
What we test
- Gas and hybrid cars, 2000 and newer
- Diesel cars and pickups, 1998 and newer
- RVs under 12,000 lbs GVWR
We’re a non-STAR, test-only station. Most people don’t need a STAR station, but you can check your plate here to be sure.
How long is the certificate good for?
90 days from the day of the test. If the sale takes longer than that, you’ll need a new one. More on that here.
